About the event
Many youth who come to Bridge with their siblings have been acting as caregivers from a young age. They often carry far too much on their shoulders and find it hard to let go of these responsibilities, and whenever their siblings are around, they default into this parentified role. This is one reason we are prioritizing a renovation of the Bridge facility that will give teens a safe space where they can separate themselves from the littles-- a place to just be a kid, to hang out with peers and listen to music, work out, or game. A place to belong... a place of their own.
Read R's story
When R, aged 16, arrived at Bridge it was alongside his two younger sisters, ages 4 & 8. For a long time R had been the girls' primary caregiver, making sure they were clean, clothed, fed, and at school and daycare each day. This care came at a cost... R had not been attending high school, and he shared that the burden of parenting his siblings was contributing to the depression and anxiety he was experiencing.
While at Bridge, R was able to not only receive the care and attention he needed, but his sisters were also taken care of, and R was finally able to shed the parental role he'd had to take on. R spent his newfound freedom reading, sleeping, using the computer, playing games, and, like all teenagers, finding ways and spaces to explore his independence. Bridge staff helped facilitate this all they could, making sure R knew that he was allowed to be a kid himself and encouraging him to take alone time whenever he needed.
We also want to help more children find healing at Bridge by adding an additional bedroom to our facility, allowing us to care for up to 6 children at a time. This bedroom would give us more flexibility and space for the kids as well... room for a sick child to rest away from others, the ability to accept a placement who cannot share a room due to gender, age, etc.

Renovation Plans
Convert the existing carport into a teen hangout space, where they can retreat from the littles, use workout equipment, read, play video games, and more
Add an additional bedroom so we can house 6 kids at a time (the maximum allowed by WA State)
Move the location of our staff office, to allow for the additional bedroom and create more privacy for meetings with social workers & virtual visits with family members
